Abstracts

In modern times the school system has often been the subject of conflicts linked to the politics of identity, which is a central issue in the political polemos of many contemporary societies. The problem is analysed through an examination of three case studies (Indonesia, the USA and Israel). Our objective is to understand the way in which some political and social actors devote considerable energy to the education system in order to change it into schools for virtuosos capable of sanctifying economic modernity; others attempt to reconstruct an integrated social system involving the family, school and religion in highly differentiated societies and finally, how fundamentalist groups mobilise to create microsocieties.
