L’Autorité religieuse aux premiers siècles de l’islam

Abstracts

The question of religious authority in classical Islam was the centre of a doctrinal construction which attempted to establish the legitimacy of a body of specialists known as the “men of knowledge”. These specialists were the conveyors and commentators of a prophetic tradition which imposed absolute conformity between that which exists – in this world – and divine will in the hereafter. Yet these “men of knowledge” also disguised, in their teachings, another tendency developing in the newly emerged Islam : that of an Islam becoming a real religion of salvation, subject to the inspired authority of a caliph who spoke Truth and Justice for the community of believers. This article attempts to reconstruct the specific phases and implications of this formative confrontation.
